Sheffield Visual Gage Comparator: Also known as a shadowgraph, this precision measurement instrument is well known for its rugged design.

Principles Of Operation - The Visual Gage Comparator is set by presision gage blocks or other standard masters. Its operation combines two simple basic ideas found in no other precision measuring instrument - the positive, frictionless reed mechanism and the projected target shadow. Combined they produce the magnifications (500 thru 2,000 to 1) required in industrial gaging and sonstitite a simple, fast, and inherently accurate mechanism

The Reed Mechanism - The reed mechanism consists of two metal blocks - one rigidly fixed to the gage head case. The other is a floating block carrying the gaging spindle as an integral part. Two horizontal metal reeds connect these blocks. At the top of each block two verticle reeds are attached to the inner faces. Their upper ends are joined to an arm which carries a target. As the spindle is moved upward during a gaging operation, the horizontal reeds deflect slightly causing the verticle reeds to swing through an arc. The target arm, an extension of the verticle reeds, swings through a greater arc and interrupts an optically projected light beam. A shadow is cast upon the scale and indicates the amplified amount of spindle movement. The shadow cast on the scale moves linearly with any movement of the gaging spindle resulting in a positive and sensitive action.
